Brake noise is one of the most common brake complaints, yet it can be difficult to diagnose because the causes range from simple wear indicators to complex vibration issues. Squealing, squeaking, grinding, and pulsating brake noises each indicate different problems that require different solutions. High-pitched squealing is often caused by brake pad wear indicators - small metal tabs designed to contact the disc when the pad material reaches minimum thickness. This is a deliberate warning that pad replacement is needed. Squealing can also be caused by glazed pad surfaces from overheating, lack of anti-squeal compound on the pad backing plate, or vibration between the pad and caliper piston. We address each cause with the appropriate remedy, whether it is pad replacement, surface preparation, or the application of vibration-damping compounds.

Grinding noise typically indicates metal-to-metal contact from completely worn brake pads or a foreign object trapped between the pad and disc. This requires immediate attention as it causes rapid disc damage. Pulsating or vibrating brake pedal during braking usually indicates disc thickness variation (DTV) or lateral runout, which causes the pad to contact the disc unevenly on each revolution. We measure disc thickness and runout to determine whether the discs can be resurfaced or need replacement.
