Wheel Bearing Replacement

Wheel bearings allow the wheel to rotate smoothly while supporting the vehicle's weight. They are sealed units that are designed to last the life of the vehicle under normal conditions, but can wear prematurely due to impact damage, water ingress, or bearing preload issues. Symptoms of a worn wheel bearing include a humming or growling noise that increases with speed, vibration through the steering wheel or seat, and in severe cases, wheel wobble that affects handling. Our wheel bearing diagnosis begins with a road test to confirm the location of the noise, as a worn bearing on one side can sometimes sound like it is coming from the opposite side. We check for play by lifting the vehicle and rocking the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions (for vertical play) and 3 and 9 o'clock positions (for steering play). We also use a chassis ear or vibration analyser to pinpoint the exact bearing that is failing. This accurate diagnosis prevents unnecessary bearing replacement.

Wheel bearing replacement on modern luxury cars typically involves removing the hub assembly, which may require special tools for pressing the bearing out of the hub housing. On vehicles with ABS, we ensure the reluctor ring is correctly positioned and the wheel speed sensor is properly aligned after installation. We use genuine OEM or premium-quality Timken, SKF, or FAG bearings that meet the original specification for load rating and sealing. After replacement, we verify that the ABS system is functioning correctly and that there are no new fault codes.
